How to use phonecards

MacDialer can utilize phonecard information to make it easy on you to keep in touch with long distance contacts. Here is how to add phonecard contacts to MacDialer.

Let's say your phonecard number is "1(800)555-1234" and the PIN is "123456789". Let's also assume that there is a menu that you must navigate, either selecting a language option or some other menu, by pressing "1". You also need to know how long to pause between dialing each portion of the phonecard infomation. Let's say that it takes 4 seconds between dialing the phonecard number and the computer at the other end picking up. There is then a 2 second pause before it asks you to select your language option. After a brief pause, it asks for your PIN number. It then takes 3 or 4 seconds to register your number and ask you to dial your contact.

You first take your number to the phonecard company "18005551234". For each two second pause before the computer picks up on the other line, you add a comma, so for a 4 second pause, you add ",,". This makes "18005551234" + ",," or "18005551234,,". Add another small pause to allow time for the menu option to come up ("18005551234,," + ",,"), add the "1" to select the "English" menu option ("18005551234,,," + "1"), and put in a pause before dialing your PIN number ("18005551234,,,1,"). Now, add your PIN number to the string and a brief pause ("18005551234,,,1," + "123456789,"). Finally, append the number of the contact that you wish to dial. Let's assume that this contact's number is "1(555)555-5555". The final number to enter into the phone number field is: "18005551234,,,1,123456789,15555555555".

This takes a lot of guess and check. Sometimes it takes the computer longer to connect or recognize your PIN number. In these cases, try adding more commas in order to add more wait time. This method also works with many touch-tone menus, so you could use this technique to also dial a number and transverse its touch-tone based menu system.
