World of Apple has reviewed Paperclip. I really the kind words. David, the reviewer said:
Paperclip, in my opinion, is designed to be what Stickies should have been.
That’s exactly my intent with Paperclip and I’m glad to see that it comes across to others as well. David also notes that Paperclip is rather simple. I’m glad that it comes across as simple but I like to point out that there’s a decent amount of power hidden away. If you control-click/right-click on a note, there’s a lot of great tools hidden in a contextual menu. There’s also applescript support and much more. I’m very happy that Paperclip appears “simple” because so much of what is going on under the hood is quite complex. I hope that I’m able to hide that away and still offer some power-user features.
I also readily admit to some graphical problems. The issues with the notes are ones that I’m still ironing out (and a result of the complexity under the hood). It’s also (at the moment) impossible (until I think of a solution) to make notes following windows as they move. That’s a technical limitation that either needs an Apple update or some intense creativity on my part. Finally, if other people are actually bothered by the NoteViewer’s corkboard background, please let me know. In my NoteViewer, the corkboard is almost completely hidden behind notes so I don’t notice it much. If it’s a widespread complaint, I’ll get a graphic artist to design a better one.
Finally, David notes that the price is a little steep. I know people like things to be cheap (especially free) but I think that Paperclip is reasonably priced. If you have the practice of making notes on lots of documents (as I do), then you’ll use this app every day. I’ll make this deal with anyone who reads this: If you download Paperclip and use it every day for a week and don’t think that it’s worth just $15, let me know. Tell me how much you think it’s worth and I might just sell it to you at that price. I like to remind people that Paperclip is a still a really young application (having been officially released on in February) and that there’s still a lot of room to grow.
