If you haven’t been there yet, there’s the promise of a new software selling system called “Golden/Braeburn”. I’ve been considering moving away from Kagi for a while so I got interested. At first, there wasn’t much information available. I only knew that it was a new software reseller by Wil Shipley. Then I tracked down the following bits of information:
- del.icio.us user notes - Web store/Wil Shipley/open source
- bitstore (Google code) - “In-app purchasing framework”
- HappyApps blog - “Note that Wil mentioned a project called Golden Braeburn which might help out with accepting payments in the future.”
- Think Secret - “Users and developers of shareware for Mac OS X can look forward to a more efficient experience for procuring licenses for the software when Golden/Braeburn launches its services later this year. Tipsters say the company, started by Wil Shipley and Lucas Newman of Delicious Monster, plans to easily enable other shareware developers to tap into the easy buying experience Delicious Monster currently employs.”
- Mac ISV - “For now the web page is tantalizingly unrevealing…”
I doubt that Golden/Braeburn will be a web store or open source. Instead, I expect an in-app framework like Delicious Library as predicted in various places. I don’t know whether G/B will be in-app-only (again, see Delicious Library) or what language the store’s web backend is built on (I suppose the smart money is on Ruby). It was easy enough to see that it’s owned by Wil Shipley and has been on his mind for a while:
whois goldenbraeburn.comdomain: goldenbraeburn.com
owner: William Shipley
organization: Delicious Monster Software

Does anyone know any more?

Acacia Tree Software will be publishing the first app to include this. Can’t say more at the moment though.
