Mark Pilgrim: On crack

To be sure, Mark Pilgrim isn’t really on crack when he hates on the iPhone. Sure, everyone wants to develop for the iPhone. Hell, everyone wants to develop for the iPod. But it isn’t going to happen.

Consumer electronic devices aren’t computers. They aren’t platforms. Apple’s brilliance when entering this department is offering a widget that just works right out of the box. To that end, they don’t let others crack into their black box. This keeps support costs down and a consistent experience across users. All told, these are good things for consumer electronics.

Remember, the iPhone is an iPod, not a computer. Apple’s position on 3rd party developers is exactly to be expected.

Oh, and for the record, the development costs for software on a Mac is exactly the same as it was last week or last year. Our rent is exactly the same and developing for Macs is a great experience.
