I watched The Libertine tonight. It was much better than I imagined and I have slightly more respect for Johnny Depp than I had previously. He does interesting flicks like The Libertine and Blow every so often but tends to do a lot of crap like the Pirates movies (I’m going to get flack for that opinion).
More to my point today, however, are the previews on the DVD. I like previews. If I go to a movie and don’t see them, I feel like I’m being cheated. I hate commercials for consumer products but I like movie previews. The Libertine disk included previews for a lot of movies that I wouldn’t think would appeal to people who generally watch movies like The Libertine.
I’m thinking of the preview for Scary Movie 4 in particular. I’m sure there is a bit of overlap in the audience but if you’re amused by the low-brow cliche-and-spoof-humor of Scary Movie 4, you’re not likely to be the type of person to actually watch The Libertine. At least, I assume that the two groups would be mostly exclusive with a low amount of crossover.
I may be mistaken, however. I’ve found a large percentage of young women who find Depp attractive also happen to be completely unable to ascertain the quality of the his movies. Perhaps they’re part of the Scary Movie crowd and just happen to find their way to The Libertine.
