Here are just a few of my favorite apps. They are probably in alphabetical order as I scrub my applications folder but new ones or ones I just happen to think of will probably be added to the end of the list. If you have a list of your own favorite apps, please include a link in the comments. I’m always interested in lists like this.
Adium is a fairly popular IM client. I don’t need most of its features. I don’t need multiple IM services. I just like it because it works like I want an IM client to work. iChat is nice, but Adium is better.

AppZapper is a great looking little application. It makes deleting applications and all its related files easy. I won it in a contest and I’ve enjoyed it ever since.

AquaLess is for those who know what a
manpage is. If you do and really hate reading lots of text in the Terminal window, try out AquaLess. It does reasonably good searching and makes it much easier to scrub through long man pages than can be done in the Terminal.

Countdown - So I snuck my own application on here. Guess what, it’s one of my favorites. I love Countdown and I’m always using it. I’m going to sneak a couple more of my apps onto this list because I use them every day. If you don’t like it, make your own list (and put a link in the comments, please).

Kill Monty - This is a great way to kill a few minutes out of a day. I’m totally addicted to the game and love to spend some time immersed in bloody carnage. Sequel? Please?

Jiggler - There’s no better way to keep your Mac from falling asleep when you don’t want it to. If I’m watching a movie in QuickTime, I launch Jiggler so I don’t have to wiggle the mouse every few minutes. It’s also great if someone else is using your Mac and you don’t want them running afoul of a password protected screensaver.

MacDialer - I said I’d sneak a few more of my own apps on here. I wrote MacDialer to fulfill one very simple need: to make calls from the Address Book. I hate remembering phone numbers and MacDialer eases that pain. If you’ve received a call from me in the last few years, it was dialed using MacDialer.

Markdown - It’s easy to forget that this is an app but it’s a great one. I now write just about everything in Markdown format. My only wish is that it had an underline attribute. I know HTML doesn’t like underlines (grr) but they’re downright necessary when talking about books and movies and whatnot in papers and formal writing.
Netflix Freak - If I had to use Netflix’s home page, I’d shoot myself. It’s worlds better than Blockbuster’s awful ‘net interface but I still hate it. Netflix Freak makes managing my Netflix account easy and enjoyable.

NetNewsWire - Do I need to say anything? I use it every day, hence a spot on the list. I’m completely unfamiliar with other RSS clients but I’ve had every need met by NNW. Hell, I thought I had every need met with NNW Lite but then I upgraded. I’ve never been so impressed by the difference in a great free version and an amazingly great paid version.

PCalc - This came with my iMac. I immediately loved it. I haven’t paid the (minimal) upgrade fee but I will eventually. Whenever I need a calculator, I turn to PCalc.

Quicksilver - It replaced LaunchBar. I paid for LaunchBar. It’s that good. I’m a complete QS acolyte now. I can hardly stand to use Macs without it and it’s always the first thing I point out to new Mac users. Point of interest, the current motto for QS (at the time of this writing) is “in medio stat argentum”. That means, roughly, “silver stands in the middle.” For future reference, “argentum vivum” (literally, “living silver”) is usually used as the term for “quicksilver/mercury.”

SiteTagger - Last one of my own, I promise. del.icio.us changed how I thought about bookmarks but it never quite fit with me. I wanted more power. Now, I use SiteTagger every day. It’s the mixture of del.icio.us-style tagging and desktop-app-power that I wanted.

SuperDuper! - SuperDuper! gave me confidence in my backup system again. There aren’t words to describe that feeling. It’s only downside: that damn exclamation point in the title.

Transmit - If it’s from Panic, it’s magic. Transmit is easily my favorite FTP client. Sure, the free clients are pretty good, but Transmit is awesome.

WeatherPop - I’ve had this on my Mac for as long as I can remember. There’s nothing quite like walking outside on a clear day holding an umbrella and listening to everyone talk about how it won’t rain, and then it does, and then everyone comes running to get under your umbrella. Yeah, I’m totally into menu bar apps. I just need more menu bar…

That about does it for my favorite apps list. There’s handful that didn’t make the list today either because it skipped my mind or I’m on the fence about including them. It’s a healthy, long list anyway. I will come back an update this list every so often. Leave comments about your list or favorite apps so I can check them out.
