Apologies and betas

I’ve been very busy and have been neglecting returning emails to people. I apologize greatly. I should have time next week to catch up on a lot of things that I’ve been needing to do.

I have, however, found some spare time to work on a small side application that I’m currently calling “SiteTagger”. I’ve made the decision to start the beta cycle early and let feedback guide the path of the application. At the very least, it should be interesting. More information and how to get the beta is in the extended entry. This application comes directly from this blog post.

I liked the idea a lot. I never liked bookmarks in any web browser because I found it impossible to search them and often forgot how I had categorized them in the first place. I am an avid user of del.icio.us and Cocoalicious but I don’t like keep track of bookmarks there for some reason. Sure I can access them on any computer and have access to all kinds of cool tricks and things but the process just didn’t work for me. I wanted an application.

SiteTagger pretty does what del.icio.us does only on the desktop. You can keep and tag your bookmarks and search them easily. You can also create simple collections that let you group bookmarks by their tags. It will eventually do a lot more, but this is just the beginning.

I have plans for SiteTagger. I’d like to see some kind of del.icio.us integration (maybe) and I’d like to add the ability to export the bookmarks into a folder full of webpages. It currently only supports Safari and the applescripting is a bit weak but this will change. There’s some customizability and things that I want to put in the user’s hands and I’d like to be able to simply and easily drag items into and out of SiteTagger. These thing will come.

What I’d like is for anyone interested to download the beta and provide me with some direction as to where it should go. Should it sync with .Mac? Does it need a particular feature? Does it crash whenever it does a particular thing? Try it out and let me know. Email me with “SiteTagger” somewhere in the subject and I’ll try to move SiteTagger in whatever direction its audience takes it.

Download the beta and give it a spin. Remember this is beta software. You can grab your Safari bookmarks easily by rooting around in the File menu (this is currently rather slow, let it run). Finally, I’m considering putting a price tag on SiteTagger. I intend to develop it into something that is potentially very useful. I’d like to see it at around $5 or $10 but I don’t know what would be best. I know cheaper is usually better but it needs to be enough to make me feel drawn to develop it. What features would it need to have to warrant spending $10? How much is $5 worth? Let me know and SiteTagger will be planned appropriately. This beta expires at the end of the month.
